Step Kings have been at it for a few years now. The band put out an EP a while back that was well-recieved, then eventually captured the attention of Roadrunner Records, and have officially arrived with “Let’s Get it On” which is scheduled for a Spring 2000 release.
The 12-song debut from this 3-piece band with New York roots, was produced by Machine, who has worked with the likes of Coal Chamber, Pitchshifter, and White Zombie and looks as if it will be a success with audiences who are into bands like Bolt Upright, Limp Bizkit and Kottonmouth Kings.
There are elements of rap on “Let’s Get It On”, especially on songs like ‘Vibe‘ and ‘Recognition‘, but they aren’t overwhelming. The songs have a lot of groove to them, but I wouldn’t say they were a groove-based band. Overall, I’m hearing a lot of heavy guitar and some back-to-the-basics rock and guitar chords that have been missing lately.
The latest overwhelming “trend” within the heavy music scene seems to be the need for many musicians to return to the staples. A drum kit, a guitar, and a bass. I happen to think this is very cool. Step Kings are following along those lines with “Let’s Get It On”.
Another new rule or requirement which differs wildly from that of the eighties in comparison is that the majority of bands can actually play their instruments. There is a lot of real talent out there to be indulged in. I think Step Kings are going to make their own respective marks. Decide for yourself.
